Back in the Bush

The free-to-grow blueberry patch, Aug 22, 2011

So dry that the birch are turning gold, and dropping their leaves.
Even the tamarack are getting a pale yellow tinge. The blueberries in the shade are still robust
and big berried. In the full sun they have ripened at a smaller size,
and their leaves are starting to fall at the slightest touch
which makes picking 'clean' at bit of a struggle.
The leaves always go directly to the bottom of your picking dish
as your purple fingers try to edge them out.

With so little rain in this last month the lichen are not pillowing out like other years.

The almost solid bedrock may not have been conducive to tree planting
but the trees can find places to grow with no problem.
It is a lot easier to walk around in this kind of bush for many years.
We picked four ice cream buckets of blueberries  today..

The trailing arbutus are scattered here and there all over the place.

Here they are with lichen and blueberries.

For those who worry about the 'fiber' being left on the ground after a cut -
this is a food pantry for grubs for bears.
It just takes a few years to rot down to this state.
That seems to be the big void in ENGO's thinking, time.

The berry patch may be dry
but less that a kilometer down the road a beaver has set up a duplex.

The beaver watched me for quite a while, and I tried to get it to splash and dive.
Well, it did.
Fast
Silly me, I remembered later the camera I had can take videos!
