Getting the camera to ignore the branches was not easy.

The bare ground under the spruce is completely scratched up
so this fellow has been here since just after daylight.

EVENING GROSBEAK

EVENING GROSBEAK
Hesperiphona vespertina
April 1, 2013

Female Evening Grosbeak
Much of the male golden colour
is replaced by a grayish feathers in the female.

Size 8 inches.
I have a bird book that says its song is a sweet warble. Now, I have heard that once in about 1986 when I tracked an unknown song to a female Evening Grosbeak in my birch tree. I haven't heard it since. Mostly it is just a" metallic cry", or chattering, as they perch in the tree tops waiting to come down to the feeders. Good thing they look so "glamorous".

This is our other "winter" Grosbeak
The Pine Grosbeak
Pinicola enuceator
